The Machangulo Peninsula is a thin finger of land curling south from Mozambique toward the open Indian Ocean. On one side, the sheltered shallows of Maputo Bay. On the other, wild ocean beach that runs for kilometres without a building in sight. In between, forested dunes, sandy tracks and the kind of quiet you forget still exists.

Behind the beaches, the peninsula rises into rolling dunes swallowed by coastal forest. Trails wind through them - some marked, most not - opening onto lookouts where you can see the bay on one side and the open ocean on the other. It's the kind of landscape that makes you slow down and walk for the sake of walking.

There's barely any tarmac on the peninsula. The tracks are sand, the pace is slow, and that's exactly the point. Getting anywhere is half the adventure - a 4x4, a quad bike or just your own two feet, winding between palms, past fishing boats and the odd village. Every turn opens onto another empty beach.
